The Public Art Team of the Metuchen Downtown Alliance (MDA) is pleased to announce the Piano Project, an initiative to bring music and art to the Metuchen downtown area, presented in collaboration with the Metuchen Arts Council. Decorated pianos are being commissioned to enliven the downtown with an artistic intervention and provide people with a public amenity for their enjoyment and entertainment during the upcoming summer. This will be the second time that the pianos to be installed downtown, but the first time they will be decorated by artists.
Three outstanding artists have been selected through a competitive, open-call process:
- Lawrence Ciarallo, Hoboken, NJ
- Shauna Figueroa, Highland Park, NJ
- Olga Muzician Pacilio, Fords, NJ
From May 22-June 18, the artists will be working on the pianos, with some work sessions scheduled (weather permitting) for public observation of their process.
A public celebration of the project including the artists and musicians will be held on Friday, June 25 at 7 PM (rain date Saturday, June 26) at the following locations:
- Station Place lot behind Hailey’s Harp and Pub (after 6/26 piano relocated to Metuchen Town Plaza)
- New Street between Lotsa Balls and Sushi Suzuki (and unveiling of artwork designed by Metuchen’s
- Main Street sidewalk by Antonio’s Brick Oven Pizza
The pianos may be relocated half-way through the summer to give other venues opportunities for live music.

About the Artists
Lawrence Ciarallo is an artist, designer and muralist from the city of Hoboken, New Jersey. His work is an eclectic mix of portraits, pop art and mixed media pieces that address a myriad of topics and honor a diverse group of individuals. As part of his art practice he serves on the board of the Hoboken Art Committee and as an ambassador with Young New Yorkers, an organization based in New York City that provides diversion programs for court-involved young people.
Shauna Figueroa, aka Sho 101, is an artist from Highland Park, New Jersey. Her work is often unplanned and spontaneous, incorporating vibrant colored paints and ink markers. Ms. Figueroa has been painting since the age of five, and her artwork reflects interests in graffiti, the New York City club scene, hip-hop culture, and the art of abstract artist Wassily Kandinsky.
Olga Muzician Pacilio, is a Ukrainian-born, hand lettering artist, illustrator and graphic designer in Fords, New Jersey with a Master’s Degree in Communications Design from Pratt Institute. Currently she works in New York City as an Art Director in publishing and does freelance lettering and design as part of her personal lettering business. Recently she started working on murals and chalkboard lettering throughout New York City. Her specialties include lettering and illustration using bold colors and natural elements, as well as food and chalk lettering.
About the MDA
The Metuchen Downtown Alliance is a volunteer-based, nonprofit downtown management corporation dedicated to the management and revitalization of the designated Metuchen business district (the District) in partnership with stakeholders, residents, municipal government, and other partners. Since being founded in 2016, Metuchen has seen over 126 business starts, more than $150 million of investment, and added 387 apartments downtown.
